Neal Barrett: Pink Vodka Blues

Neal Barrett, Jr. on kirjoittanut alkoholihuuruisen jännityskertomuksen, jossa pääroolissa on alkoholi eri muodoissaan, mutta yritetään tässä rikostakin ratkaista sikäli kun juopumus sen sallii: Pink Vodka Blues (Crossroad Press, 2012; ASIN B00958053U).

Teos herättää lukijan varsin karuun todellisuuteen heti ensimmäisestä kappaleesta alkaen: "A designated drinker is going to wake up and wonder where he is. This is bound to happen sometimes. A bottle doesn't always point north. Sometimes it goes the other way. I knew I wasn't home. The spot on the ceiling where the water leaks through looked like a horse. A roach I didn't know crawled down its back. My spot looks like a duck. I like to wake up and see a duck. It's the little things that make a house a home."

Yksin päähenkilömme Russell Murray ei joudu huuruissa touhuamaan, rikosta selvitellessään hänellä on aika ajoin seuraa (ja jopa apua) ystävästään Sherrystä, joka on saman alan osaajia: "Sherry took a slug of vodka now and then, keeping on a fairly even keel, not entirely sober, but able to complete every sentence without leaving many words out. Sherry knew her stuff. If you drink for seven hours and you had a good start before that, just staying conscious qualifies you for the drunk's Olympic team."
